Bugbug Village: East Bali's Must-Visit Destination

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

If you wish to see Bali in the old days where modernization is slow, then go no further. This place is what you are up to.

Redundancy is neither creative nor attractive. Wanderlusts who visited Bali have been flocking in the south in the sake of either being close from the airport, or simply the love of being in the crowed. Sometimes the wave is the reason for board riders. This trend has been a habit for years without any sign of changes.

However, once you know what the Bugbug village could offer you will like to see (and possibly to do) something different.

About Bugbug Village

Bugbug village is one of five villages in the district of Karangasem. It covers 8.87 square kilometers that is home to about 11.291 people, which is equal to 1.027 people per square kilometer. The village covers three popular beaches i.e. Candidasa, South beach and the Virgin beach that is locally known as Pantai Pasir Putih.

Villagers in Bugbug conduct series of ceremonies throughout the year. And, the biggest ceremony is Usaba in Gumang temple. It used to be held annually but then, for efficiency, is being held every two years. This temple is praised by five villages i.e. Bugbug, Jasri, Bebandem, Datah and Ngis. Bugbug itself is considered as the biggest among the others.

Bugbug Village Committee (BP2DAB) has been working very hard since 2011 to introduce its tourism to world wide wanderlusts. They got some four prides that are considerably attractive, namely: Candidasa that is popular with its white sandy beaches, where most hotels and restaurants are located; Bukit Asah that is widely known as camping ground and trekking site with its stunning whale-shark-island view; Sang Hyang Ambu, the phenomenal gate to Gumang temple and, lastly, the Virgin beach (pantai Pasir Putih) that is an assembly point to local fishermen.

The Committee has committed to keep the heritage as natural as possible in order to accommodate nature prayers.

Villagers' way of life

Bugbug villagers got two main options to live from; if it is not from fishing they must be doing something as a farmer. The rests are doing various activities e.g. public servants, running a shop and working in local businesses.

Nearly each family in Bugbug village own at least two fishing boats; the small one for short and the bigger one for long fishing trips. The unique part of themis that each family, the fishermen, is also farming and is responsible to a cow or more. When the weather is good the father will go for fishing while the mother takes care of the cow and farm. Their children are often voluntarily joining either of them.

Fishing covers their daily needs while the farm-thing is more for long-term-bill like school fee and other costly expenses.

How to get there?

Bugbug village is easily reachable from the airport even if you are new comer on the island. Even if you think you are lost, people along the way would be very happy to advise you with best route.

You can simply set your GPS pointing Candidasa or Bukit Asah, and then fasten your seat belt for an about 75 minutes coast-ride to the east. If the traffic is good you will beat the 65 km journey even faster. The two-line-road is comfortable to ride on and it offers convenient stores along the street. If you are in a good mood, no jet lag or else, you can stop by in some destinations before setting yourself in the hotel. There are numbers of attraction such as Bali Safari and Marine Park, Komune Beach Club, Goa Lawah Temple and traditional salt factory(ies) in between, just to name a few.
